Christopher Nolan’s latest film is a trip and half deep into the human psyche. In a world where individuals other than the dreamer can enter people’s dreams, we are shown the dangers that this kind of dynamic circumstance can present. Information can be taken from the mind of the dreamer through the dream and perhaps even worse, ideas can be implanted as well.
Without delving too much into the plot (which I have to say is fairly straightforward, but hard to explain…kind of like a dream, yes?) because I think you should see it for yourself, I can say that this is the kind of movie I think people will either love or hate. Either you will be tickled by the concepts and rules presented around the dream worlds, or they will piss you off. At one plot shift point during the film, someone sitting near me exclaimed, “You've got to be kidding!”

I was definitely tickled by this movie. It can easily fall into the mind-bending category of movies, like ‘The Matrix’, which it is has already been compared to in reviews. James said that he thought it ‘Out matrixed the matrix’.
While I found the movie visually stunning and daring, and deliciously thought provoking, I have to disagree with my beloved. This film was definitely more visually elegant than ‘The Matrix’, but the role the power of the psyche plays in ‘Inception’ is different than ‘The Matrix’. While both films play with the idea of what the human mind is actually capable of, ‘Inception’ creates a fairly universal set of rules and parameters of the dream world that apply to everyone equally. The power is in the hands of those within the dream, sometimes to their detriment. ‘Matrix’ shows a world where humans are at the mercy of machines, and their rules.
Simply, I think the two movies address different views of the human condition and the power of the mind, and while both ask you to flex your brain a bit, they do so quite differently.
I would definitely recommend this movie, though with the heads up that it is 2.5 hours long. Plan accordingly; this isn’t the kind of movie you want to miss a part of for a pee break.
Also, the last scene offers a great ending to the movie and I would love to hear your thoughts on it☺

Kevin and I saw this, too, and he really really liked it. He was talking about it for several hours afterward and is looking forward to buying it on Blu Ray when it comes out.
ReplyDeleteI was kind of "eh" about it. I thought it was interesting, a good twist on the story, and well written, crafted, and directed, but after once through I'm satisfied. I didn't see anything that made me think WOW! or WTF?
Maybe because my brain is tired and not up for challenge? Not sure. But I'm reading these glowing reviews and wondering if I'm missing something or if my standard for really impactful is just different.
I think the impact of a movie manifests very differently for different people. For me, this movie had a very...elegant (I know I used it before too...can't think of another better one:)) presentation of a new way to explain how our minds work. It certainly wasn't a WOW movie for me. More of a 'damn, that was beautifully portrayed and my mind is still moving the details around' than anything else. On the other hand, I know a lot of people who LOVED LOVED LOVED the movie 'Fargo' and for the life of me I still don't get what the big deal was with that movie. I sat through it and was either bored or grossed out the whole time.
