Movie Moment- Bridesmaids (2011)

A couple months ago, the first trailer for Bridesmaids came out. It served as excellent procrastination fodder during the last push of school. I shared the trailer with two girlfriends who are getting married in the next few months. We promised to go see it together when it came out. We went this past Monday and had a blast.

The movie follows Annie (Kristen Wiig) through the trials and tribulations of being the maid of honor for her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph). Annie's life is a big hot mess and she struggles to hold onto herself while still 'being there' for her friend.

What initially drew me to the movie were specific scenes in the trailers that had me almost spewing coffee- one in particular with birth control pills still makes me giggle. A lot of them were not in the final cut of the movie. That was disappointing. Still, the movie really thrived with the comedic timing of the two leading ladies as well at the rest of the bridesmaids (especially the groom's sister Megan, a hilarious Melissa McCarthy). Some of the bantering felt a little drawn out at times, but would always bounce back in the end.

There was some straight up gross out humor that was a little much at times. There is one epic scene in a wedding dress shop and quite a few of the ladies have food posioning...yeah, they went there. It was definitely hilarious but also cringe worthy.

I give this movie 6.5/10. I enjoyed it, but the final edit felt really choppy, like we were watching a series of scenes that more or less flowed together. I can't help but wonder if the DVD release will have more flow if all the deleted scenes are there. Still, I do recommend it- it's not a chick flick at all, and anyone who is in the wedding prep process or has survived it might really get a kick out of it.
